so mad
SO mad
Oh shock and horror, the small but beautifully-animated picture from an indie production company with three features to its name hasn’t brought in as much money as the latest blockbuster from one of the world’s largest media conglomerates.
This is like whining that a surprise-hit self-published novel got knocked off the bestseller charts by the new Stephen King. If you’d actually look at all the numbers in those screenshots, you’ll notice that Book of Life has, in three weeks, paid back its budget plus an almost 50% profit. That is not a failure.
Big Hero 6, meanwhile, still has half its budget to earn back worldwide. Which it probably will if it keeps on this track. So both of these films are doing just fine.
I am so sick of you people turning this into an unnecessary contest with skewed statistics so you have something to be mad about. The world is better for having both the small, beautiful celebration of an underrepresented minority and the big, multi-ethnic team adventure showing children how to deal with grief. There’s also room for the small, thoughtful Paranorman with all its quiet important messages and the big, uber-popular Frozen with its bright central two-woman story of sisterhood.
None of these movies are perfect. That is okay. There is room for all of them and the success of one does not exclude the value or impact of another.
